Perhaps if you'd read the man page for chmod, a solution would have presented
itself to you.

cd /
chmod -R a+r .
chmod -R a+x bin sbin usr/sbin usr/local/bin lib/gcc-lib/*.exe usr/X11R6/bin
      ^^

You apparently missed the "-R" part.
